My family and where I lived as a child sparked my interest in history. Learning that my ancestors arrived on the Mayflower caused me to think about early settlement days, and knowing that my Shoreham ancestors started a gristmill, as well as the farm where l grew up, was a source of interest. Also serving as further food for the imagination, I found arrowheads and a stone adze in the soil we tilled in Shoreham.
The landscapes I hook, with farm houses and barns and their surrounding fields, provide another way to tell the story of life in rural Vermont. I have to say that the landscapes are my favorite subjects. Each one feels like a real place to me, although I can use artistic license to select different elements from my memories to make a certain composition.
