Favorite Books on Rug Hooking:

If I had but one book to delight and inspire, it would be American Hooked and Sewn Rugs: Folk Art Underfoot, by Joel and Kate Kopp. The authors’ acute observations and examples are illuminating, entertaining, and comprehensive.

Rug Hooking in Maine 1838-1940, by Mildred Cole Péladeau, is another essential book for rug hookers who have an interest in the history of the craft.

Jessie A. Turbayne is a noted authority on hooked rugs, and has authored many books, any of which is entertaining and informative.

I would be sure to have Amy Oxford’s Hooked Rugs Today. The first edition documents the “Hooked in the Mountains IX” rug show of 2004, which was held at the Shelburne Museum, in Shelburne, Vermont. The exhibition is the annual showcase of the Green Mountain Rug Hooking Guild, which was founded in 1981. A new two-volume edition of Hooked Rugs Today chronicles the enormous 2006 Guild exhibition, where over 900 rugs were hung in the Round Barn of the Shelburne Museum.

As promised, The Complete Book of Rug Hooking, by Joan Moshimer, covers every aspect of making hooked rugs.
